Red Deer College and Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association (CIAWA) invite community members and media partners to the opening reception of the Photovoice exhibition “Making a Life in Central Alberta: Voices of Immigrant Women.”

Program begins 5:15 p.m.
Red Deer College Library (see map)
Refreshments will be served

This exhibition is part of the three-year research project, “Making Life Easier: A Participatory Assessment of Services for Immigrant Women in Central Alberta.” The project, which is led by Sociology instructors Dr. Choon-Lee Chai and Dr. Krista Robson, assesses settlement programs and services for immigrant women in central Alberta. In partnership with CAIWA, the RDC team connects with immigrant women to learn about their settlement experiences and needs, with the intention of identifying the strengths and weaknesses of settlement programs and services.

Immigrant women participating in the research were invited to share their experience through an activity called Photovoice. They captured photographs to represent important aspects of their settlement experiences. Then, they took part in interviews where they talked about the photographs they had made and told their stories of settling and making a life in central Alberta. The photographs and interviews were completed between 2016 and 2017.

These photographs and stories tell the experience of women who have immigrated to Canada and settled in central Alberta. They speak of optimism, ambition, achievement, love, family, children, faith, friendship, new opportunities, new discoveries and everyday life in central Alberta. They also speak frankly of underemployment, social isolation, discrimination, service gaps and other challenges that newcomers strive, with hope and persistence, to overcome.
