The Trouble with Assumptions

Just because a source of information looks legitimate does not make it credible.

For instance, the fact that a Website exists on the server of a reputable educational institution does not mean the institution necessarily endorses the site. Many universities provide Web space for class or student use with little or no control over content. A literary critique or an explanation of a scientific concept located on a university’s Web server may, in fact, be written by a first year student as a class project.

Or, a letter to the editor published in a peer-reviewed journal has likely not gone through the same rigorous evaluation process that other articles in the journal will have.

It’s up to you to determine if information is reliable and appropriate for your use. Even the most straightforward content should be double-checked with other sources for validity.
