There are 6 major characteristics of a scholarly journal.

  • Journals are usually published on a quarterly (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) or monthly basis.
  • Long, in-depth articles cover case studies, report research, and include bibliographies.
  • Journals are geared toward scholars, researchers, or professionals.
  • Journals contain few photographs or advertisements.
  • Journals are usually sponsored by academic or professional organizations.
  • Articles are written by experts, researchers, or professionals in their field.
